Prepare Your Excel Spreadsheet
Open Excel and set up a new sheet. Adjust column widths and row heights to create uniform squares for the crossword grid. For beginners, set each to 15 pixels for simplicity.
Design the Grid Layout
Manually draw the crossword shape. Use Excel's fill feature to color cells for empty spaces (black) and word squares (white). Aim for a small grid (e.g., 10x10) as a starting point for easy management.
- Press Alt + H to access the Home tab.
- Select cells and apply black background for blocked areas.
- Use borders around each square to enhance visibility.
Input Crossword Words
Type words into the appropriate cells. For horizontal words, enter them across consecutive columns; for vertical words, down consecutive rows. Add small numbers in corners for clue numbering if needed.

- Type "TEST" horizontally from cell B2 to E2.
- Type "PUZZLE" vertically from cell C2 to C7, ensuring overlap.
Format for Clarity and Functionality
Apply formatting to mimic a puzzle. Freeze panes for scrolling and set cell text alignment to center. Use font size adjustments for better readability.
- Select all grid cells and center-align text.
- Test word placement by tabbing through cells.
Add Clues and Finalize
Create a separate section for clues. On a new worksheet tab, list numbered clues like "1 Down: Five-letter word for fun." Save your Excel file securely to share or print.
- Click Insert > New Sheet to add clues.
- Type "1 Across: Example description" beside each number.
